Welcome To Retrospect
Congratulations! You are about to safeguard your files with the
most reliable backup software on the market. Retrospect was
created with one goal in mind: to allow you to restore important
files that would otherwise be lost.

If you've used other backup software before, you'll find
Retrospect operates differently in a few areas. These
differences ensure greater reliability and allow Retrospect to
be faster and more efficient. Everything in Retrospect is
designed for better restores.

Understanding a few key concepts will make using Retrospect
easy, as well as provide an understanding of why Retrospect is
"better backup." The Retrospect User's Guide includes a great
deal of information about Retrospect and its various functions.
At a minimum, we recommend that you read the following summary
of key technologies contained within Retrospect as well as the
quick start section contained within the Retrospect User's
Guide.

Installation
In order to install Retrospect, double click on the Retrospect
installation icon and allow the wizard to guide you through the
simple installation process. Before you begin using Retrospect
you are required to enter a license code. This code can be found
below and will allow you to proceed with the installation.

Retrospect Technologies
Retrospect copies files from a source-a hard disk, typically,
that might even be on another computer on your network-to a
backup set. IncrementalPLUS (tm) technology determines which files
are new or different, so, unlike other backup programs, you
don't have to choose between backup types such as Full,
Incremental, and Differential. Snapshots make restoring after
many backups just as simple as restoring after the first backup.

Backup Sets
A backup set is a set of disks, tapes, or CDs that contains
copies of your backed up files. You can give backup sets names
such as "Daily Backup" and Retrospect automatically names the
media accordingly. For example, the first and second pieces of
media in Daily Backup would be called 1-Daily Backup and 2-Daily
Backup. There is virtually no limit to the number of pieces of
media you can have in a single backup set, and there is no limit
to the number of backup sets you can have.

Snapshots
For each backup, Retrospect creates a Snapshot that stores the
names and locations of all files and directories. Snapshots
allow you to restore a hard disk exactly as it was after any
backup, even after numerous incremental backups spanning several
pieces of media.

IncrementalPLUS
Retrospect's IncrementalPLUS technology combines the efficiency
of incremental backups with the advantages of full backups. The
advantages of incremental backups are that only new or changed
files are copied, so backups take less time and require less
storage media.

The two major problems with typical incremental backups are that
using dates or "archive bits" to determine which files have
changed is unreliable, and that restoring from multiple
"sessions" or "jobs" is more com-plex. While "Full" backups
don't have these problems, they require copying all files for
each backup, which is time consuming and inefficient.

Retrospect's IncrementalPLUS backups are different. Retrospect
ensures that every file required to make a backup set complete
is copied quickly and efficiently. Yet even after many
incremental backups, Retrospect ensures a complete restore in a
single pass using the Snapshot. IncrementalPLUS makes backups
fast and complete and makes restores easy and reliable.
This is one of the areas Retrospect is most obviously "better
backup."

Retrospect Clients
Retrospect Clients enable you to add other computers on a
network, including Windows and Macintosh desktops, notebooks,
and servers, to your Retrospect backup. Once the client is
installed, only TCP/IP connectivity is required. No Microsoft or
other networking technologies are needed.

Computers backed up across the network can be completely
restored, including permissions and registry information.

EasyScript
If you're new to Retrospect and want to set up regular automated
backups, use Retrospect's EasyScript (tm) Wizard to get started. By
simply answering a few questions, Retrospect creates the entire
backup script for you. Just launch Retrospect, click on the
Automate tab, and select EasyScript.

Backup Server
Backup Server makes backing up truly automatic. When Backup
Server is turned on, Retrospect watches for computers in need of
backup. When one appears-perhaps a notebook is plugged in or a
certain amount of time has elapsed since a computer was last
backed up-Retrospect backs it up automatically, operating
unobtrusively in the background. This patent-pending concept in
backup is an innovation perfect for networks of any size.

Supported Hardware
Retrospect supports a wide variety of backup devices and a large
number of individual models via custom drivers built into the
product. You will not need to install drivers or configure your
backup device before using Retrospect.

Retrospect is optimized to work with all removable cartridge
drives such as SuperDisk, Zip, Jaz, MO, and DVD-RAM. Retrospect
supports a large number of SCSI and ATAPI tape drive mechanisms,
including DAT, Exabyte, Travan, DLT, and AIT, and many tape
libraries. Retrospect was also the first commercial backup
application to support recordable compact disc drives (CD-R).
For details on supported devices, refer to the Dantz web site
for the latest list of supported drives.
